I am not a professional in this field, but my understanding is social structure developed naturally. Certain people have more means to acquire goods than others, dating back to the inefficiencies of the barter system.

In a business sense, we study social structure because we can benefit from understanding different needs and desires from multiple demographics, identifying potential markets for products and services.
