What can I do about a debt that is about ten years old, and is still attracting interest?

this debt for a bank overdraft, which I did not have a facility for, the amount overdrawn was about R16 000.00, (in the year 2000). I paid a few installments towards this o/d while I was still employed. In 2002 I was unemployed for a while and did not pay for a while. A judgement was taken out against me in 2002, I paid for a few months. The payments were very irregular, due to being on commission only. I never heard from anybody until 2007 (another attorney ) about the same debt, but now the debt had escalated to R55 000.00. I paid a few instalments, but it has been 6 months now since I’ve paid. The amount is still R55 000.00

I don’t know about India law, but in the US, you would normally pay it off by trying to pay more than the interest so that the principal amount goes down as well. Other options here include debt settlement where you try to agree upon a smaller pay back amount that the lender would accept, or bankruptcy.
