Does a cashed check constitute a contract?

A deposit check was given to (and promptly cashed by) a local club over four years ago to reserve their facility for a class reunion. It was discovered that someone recently booked and accepted a deposit for a wedding reception on that same date.

The current powers that be have told the new event manager to have the accountant return the deposit to the person who sent it four years ago. While the event manager at that time never sent a formal contract, the memo line on the check that was used for the deposit clearly indicates the date and event….

Who should get to use the facility on that date?
