What is rating scale in performance appraisal?

in performance appraisal they say there is a rating scale, i want to know what is it and can show me an example of it?

This type of rating scales are usually proprietary to the organization. What they look at and how items are rated would be different.

Rating scale is usually used in larger organizations where the management is trying to have a more consistent process across the organization. However, even the best scale is subjected to the rater’s interpretation of the item and scale. Also, it is unlike that two raters will rate the same person exactly the same way.
