American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)
Definition
A non-profit classification society founded in 1862 for the purpose of certifying ship captains. Its role has expanded to assist with the development and coordination of safety standards in the shipping industry. The ABS writes rules that marine vessel and structure manufacturers follow when designing and building ships and offshore facilities.
