American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

US non-government organization which develops and publishes standards for almost the entire US industry. Its standards setting procedure provides a forum for discussion among academics, special interest groups, users, and vendors. An ANSI standard, though termed 'voluntary,' carries a lot of clout in the US and elsewhere.
