Beaufort scale

Definition

Empirical scale for estimating wind speed, ranging from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane), by observing the wind's effect on waves and visibility. Devised by the UK admiral Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857) originally for wind-over-sea, it has a corresponding scale for wind-over-land.
