Carriage of Goods by Sea Act

American legislation passed in 1936, as an enforcement of the international Hague Rules, stating that cargo ship owners are directly responsible for the shipped packages, but the liability per package is limited to $500 per package, with a time limit of one year for filing litigation. The act is automatically enforced in international transits but not in domestic ones, unless the carrier agrees to be bound.
