Codex Alimentarius Commission

  

Definition

United Nations (UN) commission that drafts food and hygiene standards and publishes them in the Codex Alimentarius. These non-binding (voluntary) standards become enforceable when accepted as national standards by the member countries. Jointly sponsored in 1962 by two UN bodies (Food & Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization) it now has over 145 countries as its members.
