European Center For nuclear research near Geneva (straddling the Swiss-French border) where in 1989 the research scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and World Wide Web (WWW) to send and receive electronic documents created by different software packages.
