Dun & Bradstreet (D&B)
Definition
US financial data publishing firm headquartered in downtown Manhattan, New York. Founded as the Mercantile Agency, a commercial credit service, in 1841, it got the 'Dun' in its name in 1859 from the founder's grandson RG Dun (who employed Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S Grant, among other luminaries of that era). In 1933 it merged with a competing firm that brought in the 'Bradstreet.' Its 9000 employees collate, sift through, and publish specialized business information on some 100 million firms from over 200 countries. It owns the business information service firm Hoover's Inc.
