Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA)

Definition

A federal statute in the United States that prohibits communications between two parties from being disclosed or intercepted by a third party without permission or legal authorization. This statute was an amendment to the Wiretap Act of 1968, and protects stored communications and communications in progress from both individuals and governments.
