Erlang

Definition

One-hour unit of continuous or intermittent telephone traffic—conversations, faxing, internet connection, etc.—each erlang being equal to 3600 'call seconds' (36 CCS). A single one-hour call, two 30-minute calls, four 15-minute calls ... all equal one erlang. Named after its inventor, the Danish telephone engineer and a queuing-theory pioneer, Agner Krarup Erlang (1878-1929).
