European Commission

  

Definition

Subsidiary of the European Union that handles enforcement of treaties made by the union, proposed legislation, and a variety of general executive actions. The commission was founded in 1951 and is comprised of 27 Commissioners. Members are selected by their member governments, but are required to act as independents. The European Commission is the only branch of the European Union that can formally propose legislation.
