Juris Doctor (JD)
Definition
A doctoral degree of law and professional recognition conferred upon individuals after the successful completion of a three-year study of law at an accredited university. Primarily offered through universities and colleges in the United States, the first juris doctor was awarded by Harvard University in the 19th century.
