National Average Wage Index (NAWI)
Definition
An index used by the social security admission (SSA) to gauge a person's earnings for the purpose of calculating the individual's retirement benefit. The index is calculated yearly and it is dependent on income subject to federal income taxes and contributions towards deferred compensation plan. It provides useful information about the average income of workers in a country; it also provides information on wage inflation rate, which helps the federal government to tackle inflation.
