Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML)
Definition
ISO-approved text-formatting language from which Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is derived. SGML is system- and device-independent, and transfers most of the control over the appearance of a document to the program (such as a browser) used in viewing the document.
