Land registration system in which the government is the keeper of all land and title records, and a land title serves as a certificate of full, indefeasible, and valid ownership. Invented by Sir Robert Torrens, the 19th century reformer of Australian land laws, it has also been adopted by several US counties and Canadian provinces.
