Components of a chemical product which (irrespective of their relative quantity) help directly in achieving its performance objectives. In an insecticide spray, for example, the active ingredients typically constitute only 0.75 percent by weight of the entire product, 99.25 percent being the inactive or inert ingredients (such as the fragrance, propellant, and solvent).
