alternative minimum tax (AMT)
Definition
US taxation mechanism for ensuring that high income entities pay at least a minimum amount of tax despite the tax breaks they can avail of. Such entities are required to compute their income tax with and without certain credits, deductions, or exemptions and to pay the greater of the two.
