analog to digital (A-D) conversion
Definition
Required for computer storage or manipulation of analog data (such as voice) and for transmission of digital data over ordinary telephone lines. This conversion is performed by devices called digitizers or by specialized computer chips similar to those found in modems (which are actually A-D/D-A conversion devices).
