application specific integrated circuit (ASIC)

Definition

An integrated circuit (IC) which is designed and used for one specific purpose. While many ICs can be used in many different items, an ASIC will only have one designated use. An ASIC can be designated for a somewhat broad group of items, such as all cell phones, or a more specific subset, such as one particular product line of cell phones.
