asynchronous transmission mode (ATM)
Definition
High speed data transmission technology used in telecommunication networks for real-time voice, video, and data transmission. Currently it supports 25 to 622 million bits per second (Mb/sec) data speeds over optical fiber cables but cannot be used over normal (copper) telephone lines. Most of the internet backbones use ATM networks. Also called cell relay.
