Definition
Collateral posted by a defendant in a criminal trial in order to be released from jail before the schedule court hearing. The bail bond is typically a percentage of the total bond and forfeited if the defendant fails to appear in court on the scheduled date. If a defendant does not have enough cash to pay the bond, he/she may seek out a bail bondsman to assist them with payment.
