bait record
Definition
A fictitious record planted in computerized files to catch individuals who access the files improperly or illegally. A bait record will allow the owner of computerized files to identify who has accessed them. For example, a financial services firm may use a bait record consisting of a fictional identity to catch hackers attempting identity theft. The bait record will help law-enforcement officials identify the hackers.
