benzene (C6H6)
Definition
Highly flammable aromatic hydrocarbon used as a versatile solvent and feedstock for hundreds of products such as paints, plastics, and rubber. It is derived from toluene (hydrocarbon derived from petroleum) or fractional distillation of coal tar. A known carcinogen, it is also called benzol or varnish makers' and painters' (VM&P) naphtha.
