blast furnace

Definition

Tall, tapering, metal cylinder, lined with heat resistant (refractory) bricks, which reduces iron ore (such as haematite or magnetite) into pig iron. Its name refers to the high pressure air and other gases (often mixed with oil and tar) forced from its bottom through the heated ore to hasten its reduction.
