Definition
Direct marketing firm that sells books (usually on a specific topic) to its members via mail and/or internet at a discount through a catalog of new and back-listed titles. Typically, a member must buy a certain number of books to be eligible for discounts. Most book clubs operate on the opt-in method (books are mailed only on receipt of order) and some on opt-out method (books are mailed if no refusal to the offer is received within a specified period).
