bulletin board system (BBS)

Computerized information disseminating or message-passing source. Similar to a physical message board (notice board), it allows users to leave messages for others to read or pass on. In pre-Internet days, there were some 15,000 BBS on practically every conceivable topic. Now largely replaced by websites such as Usenet.
