Symbol authorized to be placed on certain goods, produced by a party other than the owner of the symbol. For example, Underwriters' Laboratories (UL) does not produce any item but, after conducting the prescribed safety tests on a firm's products, allows the firm to use its mark ('UL') on tested products.
