Definition
Bacterial infection of the small intestine, it is transmitted by contaminated food and water, and characterized by symptoms such as profuse diarrhea, vomiting, muscular cramps, and severe dehydration and loss of electrolyte. It is caused by the pathogen vibrio cholerae (comma shaped bacillus) found commonly in the poorer regions of Africa, Central and South America, Indian subcontinent and other parts of Southeast Asia.
