chromium

Definition

Alloying element essential to the manufacture of stainless steel. When added 12 to 20 percent by weight it increases the corrosion resistance and hardenability of steel and, together with carbon, imparts abrasion and wear resistance. It is a trace element vital in human nutrition, and its compounds (such as chromium sulfate) are used in leather tanning. Discovered in 1797 by the French chemist Louis Vauquelin.
