Definition
Electronic communications network used commonly for telephone conversations. In circuit-switched transmission, a dedicated electronic-link is established between the calling-party and the called-party which remains operational until the calling party hangs up. One of the two main types of electronic exchanges (the other is packet switched), it allows continuous flow of signals but (since it requires the exclusive use of the circuits) it is the more expensive type of switching. Also called line switched. See also switch.
