collateral source rule
Definition
A tort law evidentiary rule which prohibits evidence being introduced that shows that a plaintiff's injury compensation has been provided by another party. For example, evidence that an auto theft victim's loss was reimbursed by his auto insurance is not admissible in a civil suit against the perpetrator.
