compact disc-recordable (CD-R)

Designed to allow write-once recording for data archiving. A CD-R disc has an additional (orange dye) data layer (between the polycarbonate substrate and metalized reflective layer) which permits writing but not erasing and rewriting. CD-R specifications manual is called the Orange Book.
