conglomerate boom
Definition
The period of high merger and acquisition activity by companies in the early to late 1960s that were unable to sustain their earnings growth through conventional means. Led mainly by technology and defense companies, management exploited their inflated stock values to make additional acquisitions creating even larger conglomerates eventually reaching a point of diminishing returns.
