controlled variation
Definition
Variation in the results of an experiment that appears to follow a consistent or uniform pattern. Controlled variation is predictable, and can be used to recommend optimal inputs and parameters for a process once identified. The opposite of uncontrolled variation, which does not display a consistent pattern and is not predictable.
