core based statistical area (CBSA)
Definition
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) uses core based statistical area (CBSA) to uniformly define different population and geographic descriptions. Introduced in 2000, the definition for a CBSA is a functional region with at least 10,000 people. A micropolitan statistical area has 10,000 to 49,999 people along with a principle city, and a metropolitan area has 50,000 or more people.
