correspondence audit
Definition
This type of audit is performed by the IRS through the mail and is the lowest level of audits. The IRS will send out a written request for additional information to the taxpayer when they require more data or have issues with a specific tax return. Taxpayers can provide a resolution if they have one and the auditing procedure will then be closed. The majority of these types of audits are used when small amounts of money are owed.
