counter-cyclical

Definition

Movement in a direction opposite to that of a normal, or current, cycle or trend. Demand for staple food items, for example, is normally counter-cyclical to the overall economic cycle: it falls during times of general prosperity (more people eat out) and rises during economic contraction (more people eat at home).
