Definition
Unique alphanumeric code used by libraries as a part of Dewey decimal classification scheme for creating a call number for a publication. It allows books within a particular Dewey decimal number to be arranged in alphabetical order by the author's last name. Named after Charles Ammi Cutter (1837-1903), the US pioneer-librarian who invented it.
