data smoothing
Definition
The statistical manipulation of data used to reduce or eliminate short-term volatility and extract real trends and patterns from data results. Different methods are applied depending on the type and purpose of the data. For example, in economic research, a seasonal adjustment is made to separate out fluctuations in the data that recur in the same month every year such as with holidays or predictable weather patterns.
