defects per unit (DPU)

Definition

A metric used in Six Sigma and other process improvement methodologies. The observed defects per unit value is used to calculate the Defects per Million Opportunities value for a process, which in turn is used to assess the overall quality of the process output and to determine areas in which the process can be improved.
