Definition

Petroleum-distillate fuel used in compression-ignition engines (as opposed to spark-ignition engines powered by gasoline or natural gas). Heavier than gasoline, it is similar to heating oil but has cetane number of 40 or more. Named after the German engineer Alfred Diesel who invented the compression-ignition engine.
