differential tariff

Definition

A pricing technique employed by utilities to even out power consumption throughout the day. Utilities must have the capacity to meet demands for power during peak periods. At other times, a significant part of this capacity goes unused. To even out consumption, utilities offer lower rates during non-peak periods.
