digital audio tape (DAT)
Definition
Four millimeter wide magnetic tape which can store up to four gigabytes (GB) of data per cassette by using helical scan recording. Replaced in early 1990s by half-inch wide digital linear tape (DLT) that can store up to 35 gigabytes per cassette by using longitudinal recording.
