Definition
Study of the content, origin, and structure of all elements of a document to ascertain how they are related to the facts represented in the document and to its creator, in order to establish its authenticity as a documentary evidence. The term originally referred to instruments that had legal force (such as land deeds) or were used in international diplomacy (such as treaties).
