direct registration system
Definition
A system which provides for the electronic registration of securities on the books of the issuer. The system allows the securities to be transferred electronically so the investor does not need a certificate in order to take ownership over the investment. Instead of a certificate, the investor will be given a statement from the issuer or transfer agent evidencing his ownership.
