Definition
A banking system where banks are chartered and regulated at either national or state level. National banks are chartered by federal law and supervised under a federal agency while state banks are chartered by state laws and supervised under a state supervisor. The varying levels of supervision translates into different regulations for credit, lending limits and services to customers.
