duplex stainless steel

Definition

Has high amount of chromium and a slight amount of nickel. Called 'duplex' because it combines both austenitic (chromium-nickel) and ferritic (chromium only) molecular structures. Duplex stainless steel offers greater strength and higher resistance to stress-corrosion cracking than most other types of stainless steels, and is used mainly in desalination plants, heat exchangers, and marine applications.
